Snow Biking in Japan

cycling training on snow with road racing bikes with studded tires

Mt.Tokachidake (Mt.Tokachi) 97

Temperature: minus 17 degrees Celsius at the Tokachidake Hot Springs (Tokachidake Onsen).

It was cold at low altitudes because of the radiative cooling. There was a small inversion layer. The snow was muddy above 750m of altitude although the road had just been snow removed. After the interval training at the summit, he met a group of cyclists who were riding on MTBs. He began to descend with them. He had no problem in descending but the MTBs couldn’t descend directly up to the foot of the mountain because of the cold. They didn’t have enough protection against the cold like what we had. They would have consulted our website before riding in such a cold condition. He gave them some advices on protection against the cold.
