Snow Biking in Japan

cycling training on snow with road racing bikes with studded tires

Mt.Tokachidake (Mt.Tokachi) 93

Temperature: minus 15 degrees Celsius at the Tokachidake Hot Springs (Tokachidake Onsen).

The snow was well removed below 700m of altitude. However, above this altitude, it was snowing and the fresh snow layer was augmenting the resistance. Trees were covered with soft rime above 900m of altitude. Above 1100m of altitude, the fresh snow layer was thick. He had to ride carefully no to skid as the studs were too short to reach the compacted snow layer beneath the fresh snow. After the interval training at the summit, he descended. It wasn’t easy to speed on the descent as the snow was muddy. He used the technic of “inverted Y descent”.
