Snow Biking in Japan

cycling training on snow with road racing bikes with studded tires

Niseko-Goshiki Pass 5

Temperature: minus 12 degrees Celsius at the Goshiki Hot Springs (Goshiki Onsen).

He started at the summit and descended first. The road was narrow although it was cleared of snow by snowploughs. It was difficult for cars to pass each other. They would need a rotary snowplough. But for bikes, there was no problem. The road was surrounded by snow walls of 3-5 metres. It was an amazing experience to ride in the such snow corridors. After the descent, he climbed back to the summit. Just after the finish of the training, a snow mass above the road collapsed and a snow mass of about a half metres fell on the road. If he had passed a little later there, he would have been hit by the mass.
